To kick off PCBW 2015, the boyfriend and I bought tickets to The Sour and the Funky beerfest at House of 1,000 Beers this past Saturday. This review isn't just about the stupendous awesomeness of said beerfest (although that plays a large part). This review is about the glory that is HO1KB. We have never had cause to schlep out to New Kens before, so this was our first foray to this homely holy house. This homage to hops and malts. There is beer. A great deal of beer. Beer on tap -- so very many taps. Beer in refrigerated cases. Beer on the walls. Truly impressive options and range, including rare varieties and previously-unheard-of-beers. If you like beer, you must visit this place. If you love beer, you probably have already visited this place. Shame on us for taking so long to discover this gem. The relatively new owner of HO1KB, Art Barbus, was on premises and we got to chat with him for a few minutes. His love for the craft (of) brew was readily apparent (see what I did there?). The HO1KB staff was terrific, handling the hordes of Sour and Funky tasters AND the regular customers, pouring up tasters in our tulips and pints for those not fortunate enough to get tickets to the event. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and energetic, a necessary combination when hosting this many folks in your location for an afternoon. And the pizza they kept bringing out was pretty darn tasty, too. The bf and I each left with a well-priced six-pack, a happy buzz, and a darn good reason to return to New Kensington.

Beer selection is amazing. Food is amazing. The staff is really friendly and the place is comfortable. The only suggestion would be to improve the pace of service. It is slow, sometimes painfully slow. I don't think its lack of effort by the wait staff, I think its lack of wait staff. This place needs to succeed. It is delicious, fresh bar food prepared perfectly and the world needs more places like this. Once the service end gets sorted out the sky is the limit.

Super impressive, almost overwhelming selection of beer! They have a little bar and kitchen, although I can't comment on the food because I haven't tried it yet. But never fear, I'll be back!

When you're tired of buying the same beer every week, head to the house of a thousand beers! Enjoy a couple drafts, and then pick out a variety six pack and open your horizons! Great selection, wonderful service!

Loved it here! The food was amazing and I do not even like beer ( or so I thought ) and the owner came out with a sampler tray that was amazing. Very personal and friendly. I can't wait to go back!

My friends look no further for proof there is a God. He not only gave us 1,000 beers, he put them under one roof, in New Kensington of all places! I went on a Sunday with my Dad and we spent the afternoon lost in paradise. You won't find mountains of discount Budweiser brews and IC Light here, instead you will find coolers dedicated to different country's and styles of beers. It is in these hallowed cooler aisles you will find local beers like All Saints and Penn Brewery as well as the rare national and international brews. The bar has 30 rotating taps that change so often the selection is displayed on large flat screen TVs overhead. The kitchen was closed but I have to come back and try the Rueburger I have heard so much about. In a state with terrible whacky alcohol laws, a place like this is greatly appreciated. Since most people don't live in New Ken I must say it's worth a substantial drive for if you have an afternoon. House of 1,000 Beers single handedly makes New Ken a destination for any beer enthusiast.

Love this place! Great beer selection and I got a burger the other day and it was delicious. Always a first choice for grabbing a beer.

Great selection and great staff. Anyone who lives in the area and enjoys beer needs to stop here at least once. I guarantee you will find at least one beer that you have not seen in stores before. The tap list is very solid and may be the best in Pittsburgh. If I have one criticism it is that the IPAs can be a little dated.

Lots of beers but you can gather that from the name. Had the pork tacos and they were good. Kinda dark inside but there is a patio.

Excellent spot for a beer of any kind. So many to pick from. But not only beer, but great bites to eat. Wonderful place on a sunny day - take your brew and snack outside for the perfect time. Love it!!!

An exceptional variety of domestics available. That is our preference, so our kind of place. Definitely be back sooner rather than later. Mix and Match 6-Packs, seems to be the way to go .....

One of my favorite places for a pint. Happy hour is Sunday through thursday 5:30pm-7:30pm half price drafts. They have 36 drafts on tap. Don't like drafts check out their 1000 bottles they have, at very reasonable prices. If that doesn't do it for you the food is amazing! Stop by for some grub and a drink and some friendly conversation with the friendly bar tenders, Amanda and Lisa are my favorite. Or some chit chat with the locals. i promise you won't be disappointed.

By far the best selection of beer iv seen in Western Pennsylvania. From local beers to hard to find beers, this place is a must for any beer enthusiast. There are also beers on draft that you normally wouldnt see elsewhere. It can get a bit expensive, but the sheer quantity and quality of beers makes HOTB worthy of 5 stars in my opinion. Worth the trip for sure, ill be back again

It has been cleaned up a bit and the staff are still less than knowledgable. There a couple guys there that know their stuff, but every time I go (I admin is ever seldom) the bartenders require the menu number for the beer. I feel like I'm in a color by number art class or an Asian restaurant ordering a number 15 because the waitress and I don't speak the same language. But when you order a Olde School barleywine and are asked for the number instead, it looses a bit of the gravatas associated with a $3.00 an ounce beverage. If you are going to sell a beverage, and charge by the oz, like, Old Stock C.R. Vintage 2013 at $8.50 an oz, have people behind the counter that know what it is they are selling so they can treat it accordingly, like serving it in proper glassware and not a mini pilsner glass, and answering questions about the beers. I upped one star from last time but I really wish there were half stars.

Really nice place. Not too keen on decor and if your looking for a beer and food pairing I would certainly skip as they don't really have food. When it comes to ambiance it reminds me of just being in someones beer stock and they said, "Hey lets just throw some seats in here and viola," "put seats and they will come!!!" If you are just ready to strictly drink and perplex your brain on what new beer to try this is the place. Great to bring friends here drink beer over a heated discussion or even catch up. Some of the drafts are pricey and if your looking to just get a simple miller lite go else where this place has variety and those specialties should be fully taken advantage of. Its nice to order different drafts taste enjoy and actually discuss. Not the type of place to get HELLA rowdy or drunk. Head to woodpeckers for that.

No-brainer 5 stars here. Stopping in New Kensington is kinda out of my way but it's also definitely worth it. I was really blown away by the beer selection, easily the best that I have come across in the Pittsburgh area. I somehow managed to only buy one 6-pack. It's nothing short of a miracle that I made it out the door with money left in my pocket. They had an awesome selection of IPAs. They also indicate that beers of the top 4 shelves are all rated 90+ on ratebeer.com . That was very cool. Solid draft list as well of 20+ options. Everything was fairly priced and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. It seemed like a friendly crowd as well.

This place in New Kensington is a must visit if you enjoy a good beer! They have 24 beers on tap that they rotate every so often, plus the close to a thousand they have in bottles. If you don't feel like having one from any of the taps, you can always grab a bottle and drink it right there. Wife and I go here every so often, usually on a Saturday to grab a bite and try a couple of the newcomers on the tap list. The crew at ho1kb are pretty friendly and helpful, so if you have a question or need advice about what to get, they will not leave you disappointed. Most likely the best beer store in the Burgh!

I found this place via Yelp when I searched for beer stores near me. And what a find it is!! Not sure they have 1000 beers - but they have less now that I've been there quite a few times! They have a nice little bar there that looks conducive to having a thirst satisfying beverage or two. I've gone exclusively to pick my own six packs (a fabulous alternative to the buy a 6 pack at Giant Eagle option) and can't say enough good things about the place! They have pretty much anything you can image and a huge IPA selection. That's my calling card so I'm IN!! And they are super knowledgeable about the beer they do have! I picked up a New Albion (the ORIGINAL craft beer) on their recommendation and it was amazing! They have three walls of mix 'n match beers that are in the $9.95 a 6 pack category and believe me, its spectacular! My wife and I have both found some new favorites as a result of experimenting like that and have bought them time and time again. But the real joy is in trying new stuff - it's like Christmas every time you reach into the fridge to "open" a new present.....Think I'll do that now myself.....

Had a solid time here while watching some Canadian sport called hockey. My sister in law warned us about it being a little brighter than other bars but my wife and I thought it was just fine. The staff is really friendly and know their beers! I'll be back next time I'm in town.

This isn't your average bar it's the house of 1000 beers. A great place to grab a beer from the extensive draft list or grab a six pack of some of the best craft beer in the world to rake home love this place a must stop if your into great beer

Since my original review of this place they have added a jukebox, full kitchen, and they have darker lighting in the bar area, where before it was too bright. That bumps my rating from a 4 to a 5 star. I think they have well over 1,500 different beers here now. Fantastic place.

A rare 5 star for me....you can find me there often. Great beer selection and locally owned and operated which goes a long way with me. The staff is top notch and is great place to catch a game. Bottle and draft selection is A+

One of the best beer selections I have ever seen. The owner is a jackass (in the nicest way!) and was a blast to talk to. He gave my friend an awesome discount because it was his birthday. Apparently one of the few places in the country to buy Westvletern 12. I'm kind of glad they don't serve food because the focus has no reason to shift in any other directions.

Over 1000 beers at great prices. Newly added seasonal section is great. If you can't find it here you probably won't find it anywhere

Great beer selection with good prices. Made the drive from Pittsburgh after months of talking about it and was glad to finally make it. The bartender was very nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. The bar was a no frills, makeshift bar in the back of a six pack shop, that for whatever reason gave it character. Will definitely be making another trip.

The fact that it's quite a hike to House of 1000 Beers for me and I've gone there a bunch of times speaks volumes to what they have. A true must-visit for serious beer aficionados. There's "good selection" and then there's the selection at 1000 - beyond-debate the rarest and widest range of offerings I've seen in Western PA. 1000 also features 40 draft lines in a little bar area adjacent to the bottle shop. Though I've never stuck around it looked like a group of regulars having a good time and enjoying great craft beer. If this was in Pittsburgh I wouldn't go anywhere else. The only problem with 1000 is that I can't stop myself from blowing a fortune here.

Two friends of mine have been raving about this place for quite some time. We were out in Plum, so my beer snob bf was really wanting to check it out. Holy. Cow. I have never seen such a selection of beer in my entire life. Other Yelpers are correct when they say that this is one of the rarest collections of beer in Western PA. There is nothing fancy about this place, but it's selection makes up for that. They have a bar in the back where you can have libations there if you please, but really their strength is in the mixing and matching of six packs. I was over whelmed (in a good way). As it's almost fall, they were having a special deal 6 pack of pumpkin beers for $14.95...I couldn't resist. They have brewers that I had never heard of, but I'm really excited to check out. Since their inventory is so massive, they also have a sale selection. Now please note that this by no way means that the "sale" beers are not good. It's just that they only have so much space and have to keep current with the seasons. (I know this b/c I asked the cashier. lol) My bf looked like a kid in a candy store. When he saw the sale rack I'm imagining he felt how I feel on Black Friday. HA! He went with 3 larger bottles from the sale shelf, and a 6 pack of assorted brewers he had never tried. This place is worth the hike, and I know we will be back!!

House of 1000 Beers isn't fancy, but it exceeds expectations in every way, starting with their selection - they actually have 1200 beers, and a huge number are hanging out in coolers for those who need cold beer now. They also have shelves devoted to Belgian, German, and a range of other beers, plus a good selection of 6 for $9.95 beers, so you can mix IPAs, lagers and stouts to your heart's content. Plus, when the owner saw I was buying a Duchesse de Bourgogne, he gave us the details of an upcoming tasting of similar beers and said we shouldn't miss it. A beer store run by a beer aficionado - you have to love that. There are lots of other places I could buy beer, but there are few places in the Pittsburgh area that make me want to buy beer - this is one of them.

This is the best place for variety. They are friendly, always help with recommendation, and are right on every time.
